Her character is a down-on-her-luck backup singer, and let’s just say that A Star Is Born isn’t the only October release with a killer in-movie soundtrack. ![]() Dakota Johnson delivers some sad surprises while Cynthia Erivo offers both a nuanced and sympathetic characterization of a woman fed up with entitled men who claim to have grander ambitions and several show-stopping musical numbers. Jeff Bridges is as good as he’s been in years, offering a subtle and soulful take as a man coming to terms with age doing its thing. And the picture is worth your time and theatrical money for the acting alone. Look, there is nothing wrong with a movie just being a movie. ![]() Between these six folks, we’ll get twists and turns along with a puzzle-box narrative that slowly reveals itself as a rather conventional piece of pulp fiction. The place is run by a single all-purpose manager (Lewis Pullman) who has been rotting away due to the secrets he has kept and the things he has seen. It doesn’t take much detective work to presume that most of these folks (played by Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Bridges, Dakota Johnson, Cailee Spaeny and Jon Hamm) are individually up to no good, or at least that they are hiding secrets from each other and possibly themselves. After a brief prologue, the 1969-set story begins with a handful of strangers showing up at an out-of-the-way hotel known as the El Royale. ![]()
